Executive Credential Verification Directory

Official verification destinations, source limitations and a permission-first workflow for executive hiring.

By Executive Recruiters · Reviewed October 1, 2026 · No email required

Use this U.S.-focused directory to verify a specific professional claim, not to rank executives by the number of credentials they hold. A license can authorize regulated work; a certification usually demonstrates an issuer's professional standard. Neither proves leadership effectiveness, and not every executive role needs either. International claims require the relevant local authority or issuer.

10 of 10 official resources shown.

Before every check: agree a role-relevant scope and obtain candidate permission. An absent record is not proof of a false claim. Use consistent, fair hiring criteria; do not scrape registries or publish candidate data.

NASBA CPAverify public search

Applicable role: CFO or controller claiming a CPA license.

Source limitations: Participating boards supply data; updates range from daily to quarterly. Check the record date and confirm uncertainties with the issuing board.

Candidate permission: Obtain permission for the check. Ask for the licensed name, jurisdiction and license number.

NASBA boards of accountancy directory

Applicable role: Finance leadership requiring jurisdiction-specific CPA verification.

Source limitations: A national directory of board contacts and websites, not a license search. Follow the relevant board's official verification process.

Candidate permission: Obtain permission for the check. Agree which claimed jurisdictions to check.

NCBE jurisdiction and bar admission agencies

Applicable role: General counsel or other legal leaders claiming bar admission.

Source limitations: Admission-agency contacts, not a national active-lawyer registry. Ask the jurisdiction for its official attorney-status or disciplinary authority.

Candidate permission: Obtain permission for the check. Ask for admission jurisdictions and bar numbers.

State Bar of California attorney search

Applicable role: Legal leadership claiming California admission.

Source limitations: California only; review current license status and the attorney profile. It does not establish authorization in another jurisdiction.

Candidate permission: Obtain permission for the check. Confirm the candidate's California bar number.

NCEES member licensing board directory

Applicable role: Engineering executives whose duties require a Professional Engineer license.

Source limitations: Links to state and territorial boards, not a universal PE lookup. Verify status, discipline and practice authority with the relevant board.

Candidate permission: Obtain permission for the check. Ask for the PE number and issuing jurisdiction.

FINRA BrokerCheck

Applicable role: Brokerage executives or leaders claiming securities registrations.

Source limitations: Not every financial executive is registered. Historical coverage varies; disclosures can include unresolved allegations, not just proven findings.

Candidate permission: Obtain permission for the check. Confirm the CRD number and relevant registrations.

SEC Investment Adviser Public Disclosure

Applicable role: Investment-adviser leadership claiming adviser or representative registration.

Source limitations: Firm filings and individual registrations differ. Exempt reporting is not registration, and SEC registration is not an endorsement.

Candidate permission: Obtain permission for the check. Confirm the individual CRD and relevant firm identity.

SHRM Certified Directory

Applicable role: CHRO or HR executives claiming SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP.

Source limitations: Last name is required. Match certification type and identifying details; a name match alone does not establish the candidate's identity.

Candidate permission: Obtain permission for the check. Ask for the certification name and certificant ID.

HRCI Directory of Certified HR Professionals

Applicable role: HR leaders claiming credentials such as PHR or SPHR.

Source limitations: Use HRCI's linked Search portal. If it is unavailable or inconclusive, request issuer confirmation rather than assume certification is absent.

Candidate permission: Obtain permission for the check. Agree the exact HRCI designation to verify.

PMI Certification Registry

Applicable role: Operations or program leaders claiming PMP, PgMP or other PMI credentials.

Source limitations: Includes active and retired holders. Holders can opt out, so an absent listing is not evidence that a claim is false.

Candidate permission: Obtain permission for the check. Ask for the exact designation and an issuer-verifiable alternative if needed.

1. Start with duties, not initials

Define the work before defining the check. A CFO or controller may claim a CPA license without needing public-accountancy practice authority for every corporate duty. Legal leaders may need state bar authorization, including jurisdiction-specific in-house counsel rules. A PE license matters for regulated engineering work; it is not a universal requirement for software engineering executives.

For financial services, identify whether the person actually performs activities requiring securities or investment-adviser registration. HR certifications from SHRM or HRCI and PMI project-management certifications are professional credentials, not government licenses. Label each qualification required, preferred or not applicable, and explain its connection to the job. Do not add unnecessary barriers simply because a registry exists.

2. Agree a permission-first verification plan

Tell the candidate which claims you will verify, why they matter and who will see the result. Obtain permission and request the exact designation, issuing authority, jurisdiction and license or certification number. Confirm the name under which the record was issued, including relevant name changes, without collecting unrelated sensitive information.

Public access does not remove your privacy responsibilities, although consent rules differ by source and jurisdiction. If a third-party background-report provider is involved, assess applicable disclosure, written authorization and adverse-action requirements with counsel. Do not treat this directory as legal advice or as a substitute for a compliant screening process. Candidates should have a clear contact for questions and corrections.

3. Use the issuer or licensing authority

Choose the applicable category below. For CPA and PE checks, national association directories help locate the relevant state or territorial board; the board remains the licensing authority. For lawyers, NCBE provides admission-agency contacts, not a nationwide active-license registry. Ask the jurisdiction for its authoritative status service rather than rely on voluntary lawyer listings.

Use FINRA BrokerCheck for relevant brokerage registrations and SEC IAPD for adviser information. A firm record is not an individual's registration. For SHRM, HRCI and PMI, use the issuer's own directory. Follow each site's terms and verification instructions. These links open external services whose availability and privacy policies differ; this page neither queries them nor transfers your filter entries.

4. Interpret results before drawing conclusions

Match identifiers, not just names. Read current status, jurisdiction, credential type and any stated update date. Active, inactive, expired and retired are different outcomes; determine which matters for the actual duties. NASBA's participating boards update at different intervals, and PMI holders can opt out of public listings.

A missing record is not proof of a false claim. Name variations, coverage limits, update delays and technical failures require follow-up. Ask the candidate for an issuer-verifiable alternative or contact the authority through its official channel. Treat allegations differently from final findings, review relevant restrictions and allow correction or explanation before making a decision. Record unresolved checks as unresolved, not failed.

5. Keep the decision fair and the record private

Apply the same role-relevant checks at the same hiring stage to comparable candidates. Avoid protected-characteristic assumptions or unrelated personal-history searches. Credentials are one input alongside demonstrated leadership, references and job evidence, not an automatic hiring score.

Download the editable CSV log to record the source, check date, reviewer, status and necessary follow-up in your approved hiring system. Candidate-specific fields start blank. Keep only information necessary to explain the decision, restrict access and follow your retention schedule. Do not scrape registries, publish candidate records or circulate raw reports beyond authorized reviewers. Recheck time-sensitive licenses before regulated duties begin when appropriate, and document any not-applicable decision.

Common questions

Does every executive need a license or certification?

No. Requirements depend on duties, jurisdiction and sector. CPA, attorney and PE licenses concern regulated professional practice; SHRM, HRCI and PMI certifications are generally professional credentials. Define which qualifications are necessary for this particular role.

What should I do if there is no matching record?

Do not conclude that the candidate misrepresented a credential. Confirm identifiers and coverage, check update dates, ask the candidate for clarification and seek confirmation from the issuer or relevant authority. PMI expressly allows holders to opt out of its registry.

Is an exam pass the same as an active license or registration?

No. Passing an exam does not by itself establish current practice authority. Verify the applicable license or registration, jurisdiction and status. Similarly, a retired certification listing is not an active certification.

Does a disciplinary disclosure automatically disqualify a candidate?

No. Some disclosures concern unresolved allegations. Verify identity, context, final outcome and relevance to the job; let the candidate explain or correct the information. Apply consistent criteria and follow applicable legal requirements.

Are the directory filters checking a candidate?

No. They only filter the resource cards already on this page in your browser. Filter text is not sent to a server or stored by this tool. Actual verification takes place on the external authority's website under its own rules.

Can I verify licenses for every state here?

This page provides national authority directories rather than an unverified state-by-state list. Follow the relevant board or bar admission agency to its official status service. The California attorney search is a clearly labeled jurisdiction-specific example, not a nationwide search.
